Bod man fragrance

I remember seeing this commercial air during the summer time, but I have not seen one recently. I just thought this would be a good example for discussing rhetorical strategies commercials often use to persuade their consumers to buy their products. Bod Man is a brand that sells fragrances for men, and is very notable for their commercials. Most of their commercial features include a few men with muscular bodies, with many women staring at them. Also, the commercial has a woman’s voice that says, “I want your bod.” Bod creates an argument through invented ethos in order to persuade the consumers to purchase their product. It can be assumed that if you purchased their Bod Man fragrance, you will have perfect abs, and women drooling over you. The intended audience for this commercial is for men, but I am sure plenty of women and children come across this commercial. For me, I really find this commercial really funny, because it just seems too far out there to be considered real.

  1. I think the music in the ad between the creepy-lady-whispers also ad to the emotional appeal, with the heavy use of electric guitar, an element commonly found in rock music, which men enjoy. I also think the shape of the product is interesting, because it looks like a household cleaning product rather than a sensuous cologne, perhaps that makes it more appealing to men because the could buy it incognito without looking like a perv. But then again I sort of think buying the product says there's a good chance you're a perv.

  2. I think Bod’s commercials are a great example of how sound rhetorical reasoning can go completely awry if you just throw as many rhetorical strategies together as possible. As an advertising student, this commercial is offensive to my industry. Kidding. But really, I think that sometimes it’s not all about trying to use every rhetorical strategy ever, but focusing on a couple and letting them breathe and do their job. I agree that this over-the-top advertisement is just too ridiculous to seem real. I wonder how many people actually buy Bod? It must be significant if they have enough money to do a commercial! That being said, I think we ladies should all be able to recognize Bod by smell. If you show up to a date and the guy is wearing it… exit stage left.
